     View Summary

    Takaya Kawamura

2019 Standing Conference on Organisational Symbolism  (University of York, York, UK)  2019.07  Standing Conference on Organizational Symbolism

     View Summary

As some testimonies to these rationales for "critical" management learning, this paper examines some "ghostly" tales of health/social care organizations in Japan told by the eMBA students. Stories of exploited/exhausted paramedics and care workers and of impeded improvements of patients/users' value unveil the resilience of modern institutional constellations featured by the enlightening and paternalistic dominance of physicians, who are still monopolizing and controlling the most privileged segment of the isolated market of health/social care labour. Prolonging the life of heavy-weight "gladiator" advanced medicine by supplementing with the leaner "auto-repair shop" acute care and the "total institution" of long-term community care is favoured by the risk-averting and austerity government, which is struggling to contain healthcare expenditures while preserving the power to control the national health insurance as the mainstay of zombie-like "welfare-state".
